Your hook can set the tone for the rest of your essay, so here are some ideas to consider:
- It's always a good idea to check with your teacher to find out his or her preferences. Are there hooks he or she prefers or cautions against?
- If you are using the reverse-triangle method for writing an introduction, be sure to start with a broad statement that can lead into your thesis.
- Since your goal is to "hook" the reader in, you probably want to start with something attention-grabbing. Sometimes students use a short anecdote, a fun or interesting fact, a question, a quotation, an expert opinion, etc. What works best for the assignment and your thesis?
Good luck!
